Dark Knight Essay

In the film “The dark night” directed by Christopher Nolan the scene I have chosen to review is the jokers social experiment. Christopher Nolan creates suspense through lighting, music, dialogue and camera shots to paint a picture for the viewer. During this scene as the joker connects two boats, liberty and spirit containing Gothams prisoners and citizens. The Joker uses this experiment to show how Gotham is criminal comparing the citizens to the prisoners.

The Joker uses the social experiment by taking Gotham’s prisoners and innocent citizens and placing them in an intense situation. The reason for the experiment is to see the different characters and to try and show how Gotham is corrupt. The link between the detonator and the two different boats show how the citizens are given the chance to remove the people that made their city so corrupt. During the scene, suspense builds up to a point the viewer thinks the prisoners are going to blow up the other boat when one of the big prisoners gets up and grabs the detonator from the guard. At this point, Christopher Nolan leads you to think the big prisoner is going to press the button. “I’m going to do what you should have done ten minutes ago” is a quote from the prisoner when he is holding the detonator. This makes the viewer think he is going to blow the other boat up but the prisoner throws the detonator out the window into the water. This shows how the prisoner gets redemption by removing the detonator as he does not want anyone to die. It now creates a picture that Gotham isn’t as corrupt as it is portrayed and shows that bad people are not bad forever. We like to see people redeem themselves because it brings happiness and relief to other people seeing a different side of someone who was a once criminal. Christopher Nolan creates the Joker as a unique person who does not want to kill people as he would rather watch them suffer such as his social experiment. After watching other criminals fail the Joker decides he wants to make the difference in the city and stand out to disrupt the normal society of Gotham as well as batman. The joker wants Gotham to become corrupt by destroying people emotionally not physically. During the experiment, he uses the microphone to connect to both boats. He tortures the two boats by threatening to blow them both up if one doesn’t blow up the other. This creates trauma and stress to Gotham’s citizens and prisoners. Even though the prisoners have done terrible actions to harm Gotham they decide not to kill the citizens. Christopher Nolan uses this to show that Gothams worst prisoners aren’t as bad as they are portrayed. Many times the joker has the opportunity to kill citizens or batman but instead wants to show Gotham how Batman is a just as corrupt as himself. the joker understands the importance of law and order for the society of Gotham. by creating anarchy the Joker wants to affect the simple citizens and when the plan fails he attempts to go for the people who are in power such as Harvey Dent.

The director’s purpose in this scene is to emphasize law and order. If an ordinary citizen does not accept the law and order how can anyone else? The director makes the Joker scene as suspenseful as possible by putting to different types of people in Gotham in the same situation. When the citizens are on the boat law and order as a theme is used to prevent the citizens from pushing to button to blow up the other boat. This shows that they all follow the law and order because they do not want to live in a city so corrupt. The main point the Joker is trying to display is how corrupt Gotham can be and how the law and order are disobeyed by forcing the citizens into a situation where the must choose to obey or disobey the law. If an ordinary citizen does not accept the law and order how can anyone else in Gotham?. The director makes the Joker scene as suspenseful as possible by putting to different types of people in Gotham in the same situation. When the citizens and prisoners are on boats, the social experiment is used by the Joker to prove to Gotham’s people that the law and order should not reign the city. When the Citizens and prisoners do not obey the law by not attempting to blow up the other boat this triggers the Joker to become even more eager to create a large affect to Gotham itself. The two boats named spirit and liberty represent Gotham’s believes and freedom of the people. The

The costumes Christopher Nolan used for the characters make us understand what kind of person they are. The Jokers costume is a very nice suit with very unique colors being green and purple. These colours contrast each other illustrating that the Joker is not a normal man and is crazy person. His makeup in this film is very messy showing he doesn’t care about himself as his lipstick is mucked around his lips and the white face paint is all cracking showing he wants to look unusual and stand out rather than fit it. Christopher Nolan uses clear and obvious costumes which separates the citizens and prisoners on each ship. The costumes for the prisoners are orange overalls creating an instant image and idea in your mind that they are prisoners without needing to be told and the citizens wear dark and dull clothing showing they are ordinary people.

During the scene when the Joker is hanging upside down from batman, the joker’s coat is fading in an out of the lighting. In this scene when the lighting flashes on the joker and his coat it creates an idea that the Joker is unpredictable and capable of affecting Gotham’s law and order creating anarchy. the light creates the joker as the ultimate anarchist creating problems for society. Creating suspense a key moment using lighting is on batman as lowkey lighting. during the specific scene, the lighting flickers on and off him. By creating light and dark contrast Christopher Nolan is using these lighting as a theme to show batman not always portrayed as the good guy. Linking the title “Black Knight” to batman Christopher Nolan displays why batman is not the ultimate good guy. Batman is trying to be a hero preventing the Joker from performing harmful acts towards Gotham. linking the title “Black Knight” to batman Christopher Nolan displays why batman is not the ultimate good guy. The director’s purpose in this scene is to emphasize law and order. If an ordinary citizen does not accept the law and order how can anyone else in Gotham?

by reenforcing law and order, this creates most people in society to carry on and follow the certain rules. This essay and shows how the Joker in “The Dark Night” scene of the social experiment attempts to prove to Gotham, law and order is not the way it should be by create anarchy to rain down on Gotham

  1. You’re not reviewing a scene you are analysing it.

‘This makes the reader think he is going to blow the other boat up’ – you should say viewer here as it is a film.

‘that bad people are bad forever’ – don’t you mean it shows that bad people are not bad forever? You should expand on this idea? Why do we like seeing people redeem themselves?

Can you make any wider connections about corruption?

In lighting you should refer to the lighting on Batman as low key lighting. Why is he not the “ultimate good guy”Link back to the title The Dark Knight.

Try and sum up your ideas in your conclusion.

Check for spelling and use of capital letters.
